Pinned Up: The Faces of Women's Bicycle Racing

pinned up header

Racing bicycles is supposed to be fun, right? But we all know that women's participation in racing tends to be lower than men's, and there are a number of complicated and inter-related reasons for that. There's an incredible pool of local racing talent and an even deeper pool of cyclists who have probably considered trying it at some point. Hopefully the stories and experiences shared here will convince some new folks to pin on a number at least once.

Featuring interviews and portraits of local women racers of all ages, competing in all disciplines, these stories will show that while there are certainly those who choose to pursue this sport professionally, the backbone of local racing is composed of those who work or study full-time, balancing jobs, families, and everything in between in order to pursue the sport they love. Anybody, from any background, can do this.

The length of your race career and your results aren't a factor in this project. Whether it's road, track, cyclocross, enduro, XC, downhill, whatever. If you've pinned on a number or strapped on a plate and lined up for at least one sanctioned race and you want to speak about that experience and encourage others to do the same, I'd love to hear about it.

I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on all of the issues of gender equity this sport faces, nor do I have any illusions about trying to single-handedly fix all of those problems, but a little bit of awareness and exposure can be a small step in the right direction.
